April 15, 2020 Long Island Nurse: 'Little Acts Of Kindness Go A Long Way' Sign up for WCBS 880's daily newsletter for the latest updates on the coronavirus pandemic.MINEOLA, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — For health care workers on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic, every smile, every food delivery, every thank you and every kind word makes a difference. Valerie Terzano, vice president of nursing and patient care at NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola, says when walks outside a simple "thank you" or a thumbs up from six feet away means so much."Human connection is really key and even though it is important to maintain social distancing at six feet away, that basic need to connect and make a difference and make an impact is so strong in the human spirit," Terzano said. They receive tons of food daily, even boxes of Girl Scout cookies and more."The little acts of kindness go a long way. Just the other day we had 151 cases of Girl Scout cases brought to the hospital and the staff just loved it. We've had pizza, snacks, health meals, drinks, water. It gives them a lift. After a hrd day they're looking and this is the thanks they get and that's what they need," Terzano said. "The amount of food and support is overwhelming and so important for our staff."She said she was brought to tears as she read cards from people in nearby communities and from out of state, including Vermont, Florida and Massachusetts."I was crying in my office reading them and sharing them with the rest of my staff," Terzano said. There was also a parade over the weekend to thank the staff.Health care workers across all of New York have been feeling the love since the crisis started.Southside Hospital on Tuesday hosted a celebration of hope and every night at 7 p.m. New York City residents take part in a citywide applause to show their appreciation for all of the doctors, nurses, first responders and other essential workers. How we say THANK YOU!To every single hero working at @HSpecialSurgery, the members of the 19th Precinct want you to know we appreciate you more than words can describe!
